AmeriCorps Positions

The Iowa Public Health AmeriCorps (IAPHA) Program is looking for members to serve a total of 300 hours (~25-30 hours per week) this summer from June 1st to August 31st. Iowa Public Health AmeriCorps members support various public health services in Iowa City and across the state of Iowa. 

Service hours at all host sites are primarily completed in-person during typical business hours. Commuting to the host site does not count towards service hours.

Who is eligible? You must … 

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the US 
  • Have a valid driver’s license 
  • Have a high school diploma/GED 
  • Pass mandatory pre-service background checks

1. Institute for Public Health Practice, Research and Policy Member Position

Located within the University of Iowa College of Public Health, the University of Iowa Institute for Public Health Practice, Research and Policy fosters and nurtures grassroots application of cutting edge public health practice and research to address grand challenges in population health. 

Service hours at this host site are primarily completed in-person during typical business hours. Commuting to the host site does not count towards service hours.  

Anticipated Tasks: 

  • Assist with outreach and recruitment strategy for statewide lead in water testing program 
  • Aid in evaluation efforts of statewide lead in water testing program including surveying, data analysis, and data interpretation 
  • Assist with implementation/evaluation monitoring for rural vitality and health pilot project 
  • Prepare materials for and complete various tasks related to IPHPRP programs and services

2. Disaster PrepWise Member Position (2 position slots available)

Located within the University of Iowa College of Public Health, Disaster PrepWise uses an all hazards approach to help individuals and families develop tailored disaster management plans before a disaster or emergency situation happens. Join Dr. Sato Ashida’s team this summer as they continue researching disaster preparedness in a caregiving context, specifically for individuals diagnosed with dementia.   

Service hours at this host site are primarily completed in-person during typical business hours. Commuting to the host site does not count towards service hours.    

Anticipated Tasks: 

  • Conduct outreach to establish partnerships with the community 
  • Identify potential new community partnerships 
  • Deliver outreach presentations 
  • Execute Disaster PrepWise interventions  
  • Create health education materials

3. Linn County Public Health Member Position

Join the Linn County Public Health team this summer as they support the county’s 225,000+ residents through services and programs that keep the community healthy. Their efforts include helping protect the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the homes we live in. They also focus on developing community partnerships. 

Service hours at this host site are primarily completed in-person during typical business hours. Commuting to the host site does not count towards service hours. This host site is about 40 minutes from Campus.

Anticipated Tasks: 

  • Conduct outreach to establish partnerships with the community 
  • Identify potential new community partnerships 
  • Deliver outreach presentations 
  • Execute Disaster PrepWise interventions  
  • Create health education materials  
  • Support the development and activities of community health coalitions

4. Linn County Emergency Management Agency Member Position

The Linn County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) directs, controls, and coordinates response efforts during major disasters. They assist public and private organizations in developing mitigation plans to reduce the impact of disasters using hazard identification and risk assessment. Join the Linn County EMA team as they plan for the reopening of the nuclear power plant, create/facilitate emergency response exercises, and prepare for public education opportunities.  

Service hours are primarily completed in-person during typical business hours. Commuting to the host site (6301 Kirkwood Blvd SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404) does not count towards service hours. This host site is about 30 minutes from Campus.  

Anticipated Tasks: 

  • Conduct outreach to establish partnerships with the community 
  • Deliver outreach presentations or assist at outreach events 
  • Execute Disaster PrepWise interventions  
  • Participate in Alert Iowa Community Sign Up events 
  • Promote community preparedness through development of a disaster response exercise  
  • Read the Linn County Hazard Mitigation Plan and review the Hazard Vulnerability Assessment 
  • Partner with EMA in the creation of a preparedness video 
  • Assist with emergency response plan development 
  • Complete 2 FEMA Independent Study classes specific to emergency management

5. Benton County Public Health Member Position

Join the Benton County Public Health team this summer as they support the county’s residents through services and programs that promote and protect the health of individuals, families, and the community using community partnerships. 

Service hours at this host site are primarily completed in-person during typical business hours. Commuting to the host site does not count towards service hours. Please note that Benton County Public Health is located at 811 D Ave, Vinton, IA 52349, and thus applicants should reside close enough to commute to Vinton.  

Anticipated Tasks: 

  • Conduct outreach to establish partnerships with community groups 
  • Develop emergency preparedness-related educational materials 
  • Deliver health education presentations or attend community events as requested 
  • Develop and post public health messages on social media 
  • Attend meetings with community partners and other local public health departments

6. Institute for Public Health Practice, Research and Policy/MPHTC Member Position

Located within the University of Iowa College of Public Health, the University of Iowa Institute for Public Health Practice, Research and Policy (IPHPRP) fosters and nurtures grassroots application of cutting edge public health practice and research to address grand challenges in population health. This position will focus on two main areas: 1) IPHPRP’s Midwest Public Health Training Center (MPHTC) work that provides high-quality education, tools, and resources for public health professionals and 2) improving the accessibility of IPHPRP websites to ensure compliance with new laws.  

Service hours at this host site are primarily completed in-person during typical business hours. Commuting to the host site does not count towards service hours.  

Anticipated Tasks: 

  • Identify necessary changes to increase accessibility of websites and training materials 
  • Assist with making changes required to ensure compliance with new accessibility laws 
  • Assist with creation of public health workforce training materials 
  • Assist with analyzing and presenting public health workforce needs assessment survey data 
  • Prepare materials for and complete various tasks related to IPHPRP programs and services
