In 2019 Smart Growth America conducted a field scan to identify the biggest challenges to health equity facing our transportation system, as well as the strategies we should use to address these challenges in communities of all sizes, with an eye towards strategies that could particularly be applied to small and mid-sized cities, and rural areas. The report titled “The State of Transportation and Health Equity” lists six areas of recommended strategies to address the most pressing systemic challenges facing transportation and equity:
- Reframe the transportation conversation
- Allocate funding and resources equitably
- Improve the quality and diversity of transportation leadership
- Prioritize historically underrepresented communities in transportation decision-making
- Work in unison to provide people-focused infrastructure
- Invest in communities without displacement
